Moira Crossman the Sculptor

The Crazy World We Live In Starts To Make Sense……

As it all comes down to you and the form, regardless of whatever process I’m using. From this sense, it seems to me that this is what I should be doing with my life.

I strive for perfection, using simplicity of form, defined by natural materials. I am Inspired by natural forms, the window to the reason and why of existence. To create images that inspire and transform our view of the everyday. I’m driven to express the beauty around us, that is fast disappearing. Creating something that be treasured and lasting the test of time.

I make shapes, specialising in three dimensional forms.

Birds are of particular interest to me, as one eye seems to be in the sky looking at birds and the other on the ground looking at rock. A natural beauty, sawing through the sky. One that can only be admired from a far.

I attended ‘Otago Polytechnic School of Fine Arts’ in the 80’s where I learn’t much about different sculptural processes and ways of expressing Ideas. Mostly I like to carve hard rock as each rock has a life of its own, adding to the desired form.

Bronze is another medium of appeal, there is some fascinating about liquid turning hard much like the process in the formation of rock. The process is of the utmost importance, the creating being what I enjoy most.

Later I attended ‘Whare Wananga’ at ‘Te Whare Arohanui’ in Waitati, Dunedin where I learn’t to weave. The contrast of hard materials to soft hand woven treasures gives a sense of balance to one’s myself. I’m forever picking feathers up of the ground, saving them for my next creation.

I am inspired by all that surrounds me, encouraging the artist within to always create. - Moira Joy Crossman
