Do You Know Your Audience?
Identifying your audience is the most important understanding any business can have.
If you don't know who you’re selling to and what they need or like, how are you meant to cater to their needs? In the beginning stages of business, I guess we just take clients or sales wherever possible to build that income, positivity and portfolio. But spreading your audience wide isn't as effective as deep. I know I don't sound like I'm making any sense, but let me explain myself.
“You have to niche down to blow up”
A wise girlfriend once told me, and it's 200% on the money. Focus on your targeted audience and ask yourself these questions.
WHO ARE THEY?
WHY IS THIS YOUR NICHE?
HOW CAN THEY BENEFIT FROM MY BUSINESS?
Here's an example, if your feeling a little lost!
I'm a graphic and website designer who is passionate about helping creatives. People in the chosen field of 'making', 'creating' and 'inspiring'. Artists, fashion designers, photographers, videographers, stylists, make-up artists, writers, and self awareness / development and mentors. I know my niche and who I want to help.
I work with this audience, and not outside.
I wouldn't start designing content for an insurance company.
Why?
Because I have utterly no interest what-so-ever in insurance….
My “job” as a designer, doesn't feel like a job, because I actually do what I'm passionate about. I help creatives get online so they too can share what they're passionate about. If you just pick an audience for the sake of making money, it will start to feel like a “job” and the passion you had will fade. That's actually what happened to me. So you see, I've learnt from experience.
If you’re unsure how your targeted audience can benefit from your services, do some research! The internet is crawling with answers. I consistently look for 'hidden gems’ as I like to call them. An example would be: creatives who lack, or have no interest what-so-ever in digital design or online marketing. This is where I come in, creating content for them, then educating them along the way to maintain it. Building awareness for their businesses and sharing it with the world. I still get butterflies to this day when I'm about to launch a clients website or send off final drafts of logos! And that's what it's all about, chasing those butterflies.
So you see, knowing your audience is the foundation to any successful business, because the passion of what you love lives within your clients, not the money.
